Questions From a 3 Year Old

For an update on Calfgrit3’s injury: he’s healing up nicely. It’s really astonishing how quickly kids heal. His black eye is really just a shadow of what it was the couple days after the fall, and there’s been no lasting effect.

Now, while on the subject of Calfgrit3, he’s been asking some interesting questions lately:

“Why don’t earthworms have eyes?”

“Why does water put out fires?”

“Why is the microwave not hot?”

“Why do we read books before nap and bedtime?”

I remember when Calfgrit7 was 3 years old — he asked similarly difficult to answer questions. The only specific one I remember from him is: “Why is the sky blue?”

Notice the common theme to these questions? “Why”. Every question from a 3 year old revolves around “Why?” They don’t ask, “Where does the sun go at night?”, they ask, “Why is nighttime dark?” I don’t know why this is, but it’s an obvious pattern.

When Calfgrit7 was still a baby, before he could talk and ask questions, I vowed to myself that I would always try to answer my children’s questions. I would never shrug them off or wave them away. But I made that promise before I really knew what kind of questions kids would ask. And before I knew how many questions they could ask in a day.

I mean, take, for example, “Why does water put out fires?” Do you know why? If you do, can you answer it in a way that a 3 year old would understand? If it was just this one question, I could research the answer and tell him before putting him to bed at night. But a 3 year old can ask a dozen questions like this just on the drive to the store.

The main reason why I remember that one question above that Calfgrit7 asked when he was 3 (“Why is the sky blue?”) is because I actually did try to answer it when he asked. I happened to know the answer to that question: Because the molecules of nitrogen in the atmosphere scatter blue light waves more than they scatter other wave lengths of light. He paused a moment, as if to consider what I said, and then said, “Why is the sky blue?” I sighed.

I now understand why parents say, “Because it is,” and “Because I said so.”

August in June

Good God, look at this forecast, from the Weather Channel’s Web site, for the beginning of June. That’s 10+ degrees hotter than normal for this month — these are August temperatures.

I went outside last night after 9:00 and it was like being rolled up in a hot, wet blanket. The temperature and the humidity was oppressive even with the sun down and the sky dark.

When I park my car in the driveway or a parking lot, now, I have to remember to roll my car windows down and put up the windshield shade. This past weekend, I forgot to do that both days, and when I got in to drive a couple times, it was like being in an oven.

It’s just turned June for cryin’ out loud. Come on! We barely had any Spring temperatures and weather and we’re jumping right into Summer?

When I was a kid, Summer was my favorite season. It was hot, school was out, and my birthday was in Summer. Now that I’m an adult, Spring has become my preferred season — it’s warm, not hot. I want my Spring! Don’t cut me short on Spring! I want to complain to the management.

So Much

Sometimes I have just so much to write about that I don’t know where to start. Should I write about what Calfgrit3 did today, or about what Calfgrit7 did yesterday, or about what Cowgrit said the day before, or what I saw last week? Maybe I should just write it all in one big long post. Maybe I should write up several posts and ration them out in smaller chunks.

And then I’ve also got a bunch more pictures to post in the Amateur Photography section. But most of them are crap now that I look through them again. Maybe I shouldn’t bother putting them up. It could be embarrassing.

I’ve also got a couple more articles to write. I’ve had these ideas in my head for a few months, now, and I just haven’t had time to get to them. They’ll just have to stay on my to do list for now, because I’ve got to write these posts, first.

Cowgrit needs help with some stuff in the house, and I have to run that errand before the store closes. And I just reinstalled an old computer game this weekend thinking I’d try to find time to play it again sometime this week. And there’s that book I just got that I want to read. And that movie I just rented that I want to watch. And that game I want to test. And that TV show I want to watch. And that full eight hours of sleep I want to get.

Meh. Maybe I can just write up some rambling steam of consciousness kind of post and no one will realize I really didn’t put any effort into the post this time until they reach the end.

One Year

Technically, my first post for this blog was June 16, but I don’t want to wait another half a month to make this announcement. June 2008 marks one year that I’ve been writing this blog on a daily basis. There are many posts dated before June 2007, but they were not written for this blog — they were posted in group emails or on message boards. (I think all of the older posts are gaming related.)

As of this post, there are 452 posts on this site:

310 posts in the Life category (some posts are attached to more than one category)
24 posts in Hometown
14 posts in Site Info
12 posts in Travel
24 posts in Movies
7 posts in Comic Books
3 posts in general Computer Games
57 posts in World of Warcraft (includes some on Guild Wars)
7 posts in Table Games
4 posts in general Role Playing Games
28 posts in Dungeons & Dragons (plus many more pages discussing and reviewing some specific classic D&D adventures)

I know it’s patting myself on the back, but I’m proud that I was able to keep up my goal to post every day. I missed about 10 days here and there due to technical problems, but not one day because I just didn’t feel like it (and there have been several days when I really didn’t feel like writing anything).

There have been over 4,600 visitors to this site — that’s visitors, not just hits. I never imagined that many people would see this thing. Now, I know most don’t re-visit regularly, and many may never return a second time, but still, I’m happily surprised. For a lame-ass blog by some unknown Southern good ol’ boy, writing about mundane stuff in his life, any number higher than the number of people in his family is impressive.

Anyway, that’s enough of me ringing my own bell.

Thanks for coming by and reading. And thanks to my brother (brogrit) for regularly posting comments (since I started using blogging software, in April 2008, that allowed readers to make comments).

Y’all come back now, ya’hear.
