Online Adventure Game

I’m feeling the hankerin’ for some online adventure gaming. I usually play first-person shooters (FPSs), but I cranked up my old Diablo II game a few nights ago and remembered what fun that was.

I never played EverQuest or Ultima Online, though I’ve heard and read about them enough to basically understand the experience they provide. Lately I’ve heard and read about World of Warcraft (WoW) and Guild Wars (GW), the latest mega-multiplayer online role playing games. I’d like to get into one of them and get a personal feel for the experience.

I have a friend who plays WoW, and he’s shown me a bit of the world. It looks good, sounds fun, but it has a monthly subscription cost (after the initial game purchase). I pay enough monthly bills, and with all the games I’ve thoroughly enjoyed without paying to play (beyond the initial game purchase), I’m hesitant to start WoW. From what I’ve read and seen on the Web, Guild Wars looks similar, but it doesn’t have a monthly cost. I may pick up GW in the next few days.
