Connection Down

The connection to my server was not working yesterday morning and afternoon, so I couldn’t upload my blog until last evening. I don’t know what the problem was. I could see this site in my Web browser, but my FTP program just wasn’t making a connection. And then suddenly it was fine. <shrug>

And now my brain isn’t working. It was working fine all day yesterday, but now that I’m trying to write up a post, it’s just not connecting.

If it’s not one thing, it’s another. <shrug>

Now Serving 2,141

According to the tracking report for this site, I’ve had 2,140 visitors to this site (since June 2007). This isn’t just hits, this is two thousand different people (unique IP addresses) coming here at least once. Sure, some of these visitors may be Internet spiders/crawlers, and some may be family and friends visiting from two or more computers (office, home), but at 2,140 logged visitors, I think I can safely call it an even 2,000.

This tracking report shows me when these visitors have come, how often they come, and how they got here (directly or through a link). Since I haven’t done any real advertising for this site, the number of visitors is surprising to me.

The only “hard” content I have beyond my simple fluff daily blog posts is information in my Table Games section, with reviews and data about the Dungeons & Dragons game. I have grand plans for regular content, but finding the time to get it all done is proving very difficult.

I’m glad to see that someone finds this blog interesting enough to visit more than once, and to apparently pass word to friends about it. Thanks for that.

Now, if I could request something of you: please send me an email. I’m really curious about who is visiting, from where, and how they learned about me. If nothing more, just click the email link and send a mail saying, “Hi.” You don’t have to type up any real message.

I’ve had feedback from a few people, on various things here, but the number is very small compared to the 2,000 total visitors.

I won’t use your email address for spam, or anything like that. I don’t have the ability to use your email for anything even if I had the intent. Hell, look at this site — it’s not particularly high-tech. There’s no database storing the blog posts; these posts and pages are typed in a basic HTML editor.

I tried, way back at the beginning to install a real blog program (WordPress), but it was too difficult and aggravating to try and get to work. Since then, I’ve considered trying again, but going through all that would take time that I’m already poor of. How much could I write in the time it would take to install blogging software?

Anyway. I’m enjoying writing this daily blog, and I’m excited that a couple thousand people have read some of it.

Y’all come back now, y’hear.

Changes

As you can see, I changed how I present things here a bit. It was kind of silly to have a static main page and a daily changing second page. If I ever changed or announced anything on the main page, the folks who bookmarked the secondary page would never see the note. I do intend to have new stuff for the site — I’m working on some articles and some serial fiction — so I figured I should bring the daily postings to the main page where I could make announcements on the sides and have it actually seen.

I removed the link to my comic book postings because I just wasn’t making many posts there. I just didn’t and don’t have time to keep up so many sections. My table games and computer games sections are scarcely updated as it is, and I play those at least on a weekly basis.

Drivel

Every once in a while, I go back and read a few posts I’ve written in the past months. This blog is not my best work. Most of these posts are just not particularly well written. A few, I think, are good, and a few are pretty poor.

Many sentences are short statements without any color or vibrancy. There’s not much life in some of these posts. I think the past few years of writing bland manuals and instructions has put me into this habit. Or maybe it’s because I write these things as quickly as possible, and only give them a cursory proofread/edit. Or maybe it’s because I’m a basic hack.

It’s funny, in a not-really-funny kind of way, that it seems every time I tell someone about this blog, my posts over the previous few days have been badly written and/or on lame subjects. I need to post some things to this site that I’ve actually taken time over, that I’ve put some real effort and thought into, something I’ve given a serious editors eye.

Very little stuff here is of what I would consider professional quality — something I would include in a portfolio. I need to work on that.
